Please refrain from visiting Valladolid – I’d like to keep this little town to myself. Valladolid was originally just a brief stop for us before our one-month stay in Playa del Carmen, but it turned into one of our favorite places in Mexico. We hope it stays that way…
Visiting Valladolid, nestled in the heart of the Yucatan Peninsula, feels like stepping into a classic and authentic colonial town. Despite its proximity to the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza and several beautiful cenotes, this place still lacks major tourist crowds to some extent. This town is exactly what I envisioned when reading Latin American magical realism literature, which often takes place in the late 19th or early 20th century. When you visit Valladolid, you’ll understand what I mean.
While most towns on the Yucatan Peninsula lack a central plaza or Zocalo, Valladolid stands out with its expansive, thoughtfully designed, and immaculate main square. This square serves as a vibrant focal point where children frolic, the elderly observe the world around them, and couples engage in intimate conversations. It’s a haven for relaxation, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the ebb and flow of local life.
The presence of a spacious, well-kept main square in Valladolid sets it apart. This square functions as a community hub where children can enjoy playful moments, the elderly can leisurely observe their surroundings, and couples can engage in quiet conversations. It’s an oasis of tranquility, inviting visitors to become part of the local tapestry.
Valladolid’s Zocalo isn’t a relic of the past; it embodies a thriving, contemporary town. Various dining establishments cater to different budgets, including a high-end wine and cheese restaurant right on the Zocalo, as well as an indoor food market with several affordable yet mouthwatering local cuisine options. Valladolid boasts a small but charming cinema, an array of lively bars, and a diverse selection of shops selling clothing and intriguing souvenir items. Despite its compact size, the town is perfect for exploration on foot. However, for those who wish to venture further afield, numerous bicycle rental shops dot the area, offering the chance to explore the surrounding regions on two wheels.
The enchantment of visiting Valladolid may also be attributed to our choice of accommodation. Valladolid retains its small-town charm, and as you disembark from the bus, you’ll spot a shop adorned with the signage of La Candelaria, a hostel nestled on a nearby square that bears the same name. The management of this hostel draws from a wealth of travel and lodging experiences, encompassing everything from luxurious five-star hotels to the most rustic and adventurous hostels. La Candelaria offers impeccably clean and fresh rooms, snug and inviting beds, access to cable TV, and dormitory spaces that are open, bright, and well-ventilated.
The breakfast offerings are relatively simple, more on the lines of ‘provisions’ rather than an extensive spread. Inside the main kitchen, the head chef serves freshly baked bread and aromatic coffee. A platter of freshly cut fruits is thoughtfully arranged within the main kitchen area, which extends further into an outdoor space sheltered by a canopy. This outdoor area boasts two cozy lounging zones, a well-equipped kitchen, and even an area with three comfortable hammocks for unwinding.
For guests staying in the dormitories, a second kitchen facility is at their disposal. This secondary kitchen comes equipped with a complete set of cooking amenities, a refrigerator, and spotlessly clean (yes, you read that right, clean!) tableware and dishware. Additionally, there’s a shared TV room for the dormitory residents to enjoy.
If you’re in the mood for exploring the vicinity, you can rent snazzy cruiser bicycles for a very reasonable rate of 15 pesos per hour. These bicycles are ideal for venturing out to discover nearby cenotes such as Samula and X-Keken, located about 7 kilometers from the town. The owners of the establishment are exceedingly friendly and welcoming. The showers are meticulously maintained, ensuring a refreshing experience for guests. To add a touch of charm, there are two adorable Chihuahuas and several amiable cats, providing entertainment and companionship for animal enthusiasts.
After spending an entire month savoring the sun and sand at Carmen Beach, we soon realized that the costs associated with touring Chichen Itza were on the rise. This included a fleeting visit to Valladolid as part of the package. Faced with the prospect of exorbitant tourist prices and the allure of Valladolid’s undeniable charm, we opted to make a return to this romantically rustic town for a few extra days of Mexican delight before embarking on our journey to Belize. The uncertainty of when or if we’ll have the opportunity to revisit Valladolid looms large, and we can’t help but wonder whether this hidden gem will continue to sparkle with the arrival of an increasing number of tourists.
Therefore, we earnestly implore you to consider holding off on your visit to Valladolid. However, if the temptation is too great to resist (as it rightfully should be), we humbly request that you keep this treasure of a town close to your heart, sharing the secret with as few others as possible… or at the very least, urge them to maintain a discreet silence.
Just as you’d expect for major tourist destinations, Seychelles offers a plethora of accommodation options. As always, I recommend staying somewhere in the city center to have easy access to all the attractions.
